conquerers multiplayer on XP and Wireless network?

I have two laptops running XP. They are both connected to the same
wireless network. My son and I have two copies of the Conquerers and we
would like to be able to play each other using the multiplayer ability.

However, my machine will not connect with his. His IP address and mine
are similar, but one number off (the last one). For example, my ip
address is like xxx.xxx.x.7 and his is xxx.xxx.x.2.

When he creates a game on the tcp/LAN connection, I can see his game,
but I cannot join it. He cannot see my game when I create one.

I am guessing this problem may have something to do with firewalls, but
I am not sure. Neither of us are tech wizards, so we desperately need
help.

We have waited a long time to get two copies of this game, and now we
are pretty bummed that we cannot play together. Any help would be most
appreciated.

I assume you can "ping" each laptop from the other. If not, that is the
first priority to get the wireless connection to work for the game.
It may be possible for one computer to run both client and server software,
or not, depending on the way the game was written, and the computer's
capability.
If possible, I'd first try connecting the two laptops via ethernet
connections through the router. This should eliminate some of the possible
issues during initial troubleshooting.
What firewall is running on each machine, and what ports are open. Games
frequently require that specific ports be available that, by default, are
closed with firewall software.
Usually, home routers use a "switch" on the ethernet side, and do not mess
with connections between computers on the LAN side.
The game documentation, or the game website should list what ports and
protocols need to be available. Getting the wireless side to work may or
may not be as simple as it should be.
A great deal depends on how the wireless router is setup, and it's
capabilities. Specific ports and protocols may need to be opened on the
wireless side.
If you have one, it may also be possible to use an ethernet reversing cable,
and connect directly between the two laptops.
Your router's documentation may also be of some help.
If you post again, please identify your firewall software, and the make
/model of your router.
This may help in getting advice specific to your problem.
